Social Responsibility
In line with Merck's global commitment to employees, environmental protection and community responsibility, the corporate
social investment (CSI) policy of Merck South Africa is to support sustainable, community-based projects that contribute towards
the creation of a stable and prosperous society. The Merck CSI programme supports non-governmental, non-profitable organisations
without regard to race, gender, disability, religion, ethnicity, age or sexual orientation.
Alexandra Health Centre
Alexandra Health Centre, which forms part of the core of a large and needy community and being a near-neighbour of Merck Longmeadow,
has received an annual donation over the last 20 years.
iThemba Labantu Care Project
iThemba Labantu Care Project - the Community Centre provides love, care and faith to the community of Philippi in the Western
Cape and in particular those with HIV / AIDS. The newly built hospice provides medical and psychological support to this community.
Merck has adopted this centre and provides financial assistance to sustain the great work of the project.
World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF)
Merck has supported WWF in the form of an annual corporate membership donation over the last 10 years.
Mzansi Office Recycling Programme
Our support of the Mzansi Office Recycling Programme, a WWF project assists in raising funds for charaties associated with
paediatric HIV, SPCA and the SA Guide Dogs Association.
Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine
Committed to the education and advancement of our children, Merck was involved in a three-year sponsorship of an Advanced
Training Laboratory for the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine at UCT, which was opened at a special ceremony
on 23 March 2005.
SANCA Horizon Drug and Rehabilitation Centre
Merck has had a long relationship with SANCA Horizon Clinic, and supports the organisation’s efforts to treat substance abuse
addicts with both out- and in-patient facilities. SANCA Horizon’s work with young people through its Bridge Programme, as
well as its efforts to educate pupils and teachers from schools in the Boksburg, Actonville, Wadeville, Dobsonville and surrounding
areas, it offers communities hope and puts lives back on track.
