Oncology
Merck Serono’s work in oncology focuses on identifying key molecules involved in the formation of cancer, which can then be
used in the development of novel targeted treatments that specifically attack cancer cells. This targeted approach improves
efficacy and may also reduce the incidence of certain adverse events seen with many currently available therapies. Research
activities are focused on three areas:
• Compounds that act directly on tumor cells
• Compounds that act indirectly on tumor cells via their interaction with their local environment
• Compounds that enhance the immune system
Merck Serono’s range of development compounds comprises both chemically and biologically active ingredients. Using this targeted
approach, Merck Serono aims to prolong the survival of cancer patients and increase their quality of life. Altogether, there
are eight projects in Phase I, seven projects in Phase II and four projects in Phase III.
